What Will Students Know After Learning About Text Features 2nd Grade

Today, I wanted to come to you today to discuss teaching text features. It is one of my favorite standards to teach simply because I LOVE nonfiction text and all the colorful/helpful text features!

Common Core Standards

So let's take a peek at what mutual cadre lays out for main students. Hither are the first, second, and 3rd grade standards.

  • 1st Grade: Know and use various text features (east.grand., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or data in a text.

Non simply can students recognize these text features, but they can use them in their reading to further improve their understanding.

Showtime by Teaching Vocabulary and Text Features

Before diving into texts and passages, spend a few lessons and activities on simply pedagogy the text features themselves. I love this anchor chart from 2d Grade Style. She has labeled several popular text features and given a real example from a magazine or text for each. Always providing the students with a real case is a swell practice to help solidify their knowledge of terminology.

Here is a similar anchor nautical chart that a teacher friend of mine fabricated. She took a children'south nonfiction mag and cut out examples of text features. This video talks near glossaries, table of contents, photographs, bold print, captions, and more than! It's a basic 'teaching nonfiction' video, but covers a lot of important text features as well. Cheque out this video that puts nonfiction reading into easy steps for the students.

Focus on Explicit Teaching of Text Features

Explicit didactics of text features is incredibly important. Accept a scavenger hunt with real texts

When teaching text features, it'due south crucial to include existent examples of text features from magazines, passages, and texts. Check out these activities that allow students to hunt on their own!

This amazing weblog postal service from Scholastic shows a classroom full of eager kiddos diving into kid's magazines to find text features. They also make a (free!) 2-page binder or presentation of what they've plant. It asks the students to find specific text features within the Scholastic News!

This is a wonderful free file folder activity that The Teaching Oasis has her students complete. They use a real text from their classroom library and illustrate or write virtually the text features they find in that text. This is a bang-up way to hunt and search for text features within informational texts.

Allow them to practice in many means

It is very important to give your students many different hands-on ways to practice their new skills. Here are a few ideas that tin help your students during your ELA cake. Students learn in all dissimilar manners, then giving many different options to learn is great.

This paradigm is from the aforementioned weblog mail that I discussed before. Here, the students are making classroom posters for each of the different text features.  This is a bang-up way to tie in speaking and listening skills equally well as technology skills.

On the left you encounter a text features passages and comprehension activities. Each of my 1st, 2nd, and third grade sets comes with Lexile-leveled passages and graphic organizers to apply with any nonfiction text, whether it's a text or passage.

In the picture on the right, you run into chore cards and interactive notebook pieces. These task cards are included in whatsoever of the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd grade sets, besides! Job cards and notebook pieces can exist used independently or with a partner/group. They can be used with whatever text.

  • GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS:  In the Brain Pop Jr. video above, it discussed the importance of taking notes and using graphic organizers. These graphic organizers that are included in my text features packs tin be used on a diverseness of dissimilar texts and passages. Information technology helps the students utilize and understand text features and keeps their learning meaningful.
  • PASSAGES: Each of my text features packs take 6-7 passages in each for each specific grade level. This is for students to practice using text features and their comprehension all at in one case!

These can both be used in small group, independent reading, partner reading, for homework, for forenoon work, and more!
